Building the harmony between the digital and organic anatomy, Pearlescent is a set of masks that explores the human connection between digital identities and nature. The masks are crafted using generative modeling techniques, drawing inspiration from elements found in nature, including elements such as vascular networks, muscular structures, fungi, and various plant motifs. The underlying objective of this work is to examine the personal narratives that emerge from the interaction between humans and data, particularly in the context of the increasing digitization of individuals in an era characterized by extensive data collection practices.

One of the focal points of this project is the investigation of the challenges surrounding biometric privacy. To illustrate the contradiction inherent in the extraction of personal data without explicit consent, face masks have been chosen as a symbolic form. These masks serve as tangible representations of the significant loophole that exists within the current data governance framework, demanding attention and resolution.
Set Up
Pearlescent is a multimedia installation that is focused on creating an intimate experience that provides the audience with an insight on how data could be utilized as a tool in the distant dystopian or utopian future. The 3D printed sculptures are created using generative design with data gathered from various bacteria and fungi growth patterns. The installation creates an immersive experience that is meant to be an emotional response to the criticisms of the personal and security ramifications issues with mass data collection.
The interactive digital component of the installation features generative visuals and sounds that respond dynamically to physical movements and ambient sounds, creating an immersive multisensory experience for the audience. Created using Touch Designer, the visuals emulate the organic patterns of water ripples and the captivating play of light reflections, inviting metaphorical connections between nature and technology. These visuals harmonize with the soundscape, expertly composed through Ableton, which enriches the emotional resonance of the space. As visitors navigate the installation, their presence distorts and transforms both visuals and sounds, metaphorically echoing the influence of human actions on the interplay of data and technology. This interactive layer adds an ever-changing dimension to the installation, bridging the realms of art and technology and prompting contemplation on the repercussions of individual agency within an evolving digital landscape.
